"Mr. Troubleworthy was their twenty-five-pound cat." That one line distracts from the story because it's the writer deliberately telling the reader something that's clear enough from the descriptions. Sorry, not to nit-pick, but direct narrative that "tells" instead of "shows" is a bad habit to break. Otherwise, very nicely done!
