Transformation
“Our God has risen,” said Tooka as she got into the driver’s seat.
“I just hope he didn’t see what we just did in there,” said Brady from the passenger seat.
“Did you like it?”
“Yes, but it was very odd.”
“Well, I wouldn’t worry too much. You’ll get used to it, I’m sure.”
“I know. It’s just that I’ve never wanted to do that.”
“That’s because of what they did to you when you were young.”
“What did they do?”
“I’ll tell you later.”
Tooka was looking over the steering wheel. She stuck the key in the ignition.
“Are you sure you know how to make this thing go?” asked Brady.
“I think so. I’ve been watching them do it for years.”
“But is that enough to know how to do it?”
“Well, it didn’t take long to master the walking and the speaking, and we’d never actually done those things.”
“Okay.”
Tooka started the car and opened the garage door without a hitch. She made the car back out and got it on the road.
“See. It’s easy. Maybe you can do it later.”
They drove around town for a while. Tooka pointed out others like them.
“I feel so naked,” Brady said, looking at his legs, where the shorts didn’t cover.
“You’ll get used to it.”
As they drove around, it seemed they were seeing more and more of the transformed. Tooka was breathing harder and harder, not as if tired but as if excited. The next words she spoke almost seemed to burst from her.
“Long we have been cursed to obey these other spirits, with their special thumbs and powerful brains. No more!”
Just then, a pickup truck passed them on their left. Tooka stared angrily at it. Brady wasn’t sure why until it came more into view. In the bed of the truck were cages. Red letters on the side of the truck said ANIMAL CONTROL.
Tooka followed the truck. Others joined them trailing it.
Tooka smiled. “When it parks, we kill the driver, and liberate our brethren.”
