The Jagged Edge

He had paid his dollar; she had read his future.

“Death by thirty… death by the jagged edge,” she declared.

Thirtieth birthday tomorrow. No jagged edges. No knives of any sort. Plastic silverware, smooth-edged furniture. Even his bed on the floor. He had taken no chances.

He pulled a book randomly from the shelf; read in bed. The novel stirred him, scared him, literally, to death…

The officer looked at the coroner.

“What happened?”

“Heart attack. In bed, apparently reading.”

The coroner picked the hardback up from the dead man’s chest. He flipped the text.

“Carlonte’s new one… The Jagged Edge.”
